Welcome to the 2010-2011 season of chamber music concerts in Vancouver, BC presented by Friends of Chamber Music.  We invite you to join us for concerts featuring the Takacs, Borodin, Emerson, Prazak, Pavel Haas, Brentano, Kopelman and Vogler String Quartets as well as The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Han, Finckel, Setzer Piano Trio.

Concerts will include music by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Brahms, Berg, Bartok, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Schumann, Schulhoff, Debussy and Shostakovich.

The most perceptive comment about chamber music we have found was made by educator and musicologist Sir Henry Hadow in his introduction written to Cobbett’s Survey of Chamber Music:

“There is no kind of music in which it is more difficult to write a masterpiece, for there is none where the composer retires so intimately to the very centre and fastness of his art: it is an art as pure as sculpture and as enduring. No other form of music has such powers to engage our attention and keep it unflagging to the end.”

We are always searching for ensembles whose consummate skill and dedication bring us to the core of Sir Henry’s observation. This season we have concentrated on the string quartet literature and bring you two Russian (Borodin and Kopelman), two Czech (Prazak and Pavel Haas), and two American quartets (Emerson and Brentano), plus two quartets collaborating with guest artists (Menahem Pressler with one, Angela Cheng with the other) to perform piano quintets. The season is rounded off with a piano quartet from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and a piano trio that is a combination of two string players of the Emerson Quartet with pianist Wu Han.

The repertoire is balanced so there are programmes that will satisfy our devotees and also be enjoyed by converts to this consummate music.  Please take a look at the "concerts" pages to find the program for each concert.
