Our favourite quote about chamber music was written by Sir Henry Hadow, education innovator and musicologist:
"There is no kind of music in which it is more difficult to write a masterpiece, for there is none where the composer retires so intimately to the very centre and fastness of his art; it is an art as pure as sculpture and as enduring. No other form of music has such powers to engage our attention and keep it unflagging to the end."
We are proud to present musicians whose consummate skill and dedication to this art take us to the core of what Sir Henry admired.
In spite of limitations placed on our programming options by the Olympic cultural events schedule, we have succeeded in assembling a varied program of concerts by superb artists. For our devoted followers of that core of the chamber music literature, the string quartet, we bring the Emerson, Takacs, Mandelring and Szymanowski quartets. For friends of the piano, in addition to two piano trios, we have an ensemble created by the incomparable Menahem Pressler to present some of the too-seldom heard piano quartet literature. For further variety, works we have even less opportunity to hear will be performed by two ensembles from the talented Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, featuring the eminent clarinetist, David Shifrin.
Join us - be curious - it's a feast of great music that awaits you.
